More than 200,000 consumers downloaded mobile web solutions developer Skyfire's browser for Apple's
(NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad tablet during its first month of App Store availability. Released Dec. 22 and priced at $4.99, the Skyfire browser enables iPad users to run Adobe Flash-based video on their iOS-based devices, working around Apple's restrictions on the Flash runtime by translating video content in the HTML5 web standard; the browser then displays a thumbnail that users can click to stream the clip from Skyfire's servers.
Skyfire for iPad was built in accordance with Apple guidelines, leveraging a WebKit browser core shared with Safari as well as h.264 adaptive streaming. The browser also touts Facebook and Twitter QuickView, promising one-touch access to social media tools, as well as Google Reader support.
The original Skyfire for iPhone went on sale in the App Store in November 2010--within five hours, Skyfire "sold out" its inventory, temporarily halting sales while it worked to increase server capacity. Apple paved the way for Skyfire to expand to the iOS mobile platform after easing its hardline stance against the Flash runtime, enabling developers to design and build apps in Flash then convert their efforts to Apple-approved code.
